LAKE CLASSITICATIONS IN MINNESOTA
There are three lake classifications in Minnesota.  The reason for these various classifications is to protect the lakes and water quality of the lakes.

General Development Minnesota Lakes
General Development are usually larger lakes with at least 225 acres of water per mile of shoreline, 25 dwellings per mile of shoreline, and greater than 15 feet deep.

Recreational Development Minnesota Lakes
Recreational lakes have at least 60 to 225 acres of water per mile of shoreline and are greater than 15 feet deep.

Natural Environment Minnesota Lakes
Natural Environment lakes are usually less than 150 total acres, less than 60 acres of water per mile of shoreline,  and less than 3 dwellings per mile of shoreline.  These lakes may have some winter kill of fish, may have some swampy shoreline, and usually are less than 15 feet deep.
