New Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Dock Regulations
Late in 2007 the Minnesota DNR established new Dock and Platform Regulations on Minnesota lakes and rivers. This DNR regulation states that the total platform area can be 120sq. ft. or a total of 170 sq. ft including the walkway which can be no more than 5 ft. wide.
Someone wanting a larger structure can apply for a variance permit with the DNR for a charge of $150 - $1000 depending on size. The person applying for the permit will have to show a good reason for desire of larger structure on their river or lake.
This new Minnesota dock regulations may be difficult for the Minnesota DNR to enforce with all the other duties that Conservation Officers are required to administer.
A term that all lakeshore owners should be familiar with is Aquatic Impact Area. Although this doe not affect every waterfront home or shoreline real estate at this time, it is likely to become an important issue in the future. Aquatic impact area is defined to include all structures: docks, platforms, boat lifts, lift canopies, sand blankets, and aquatic plant removal. Your aquatic impact area should be no more than 50 ft wide or half the width of the lot, which ever is smaller, out to a depth of 4 ft of water.
